Killing a Cigar Box Guitar

Killing a Cigar Box Guitar

The picture above is me playing my own "DeltaLectric" cigar box guitar at the Speal's Tavern Guitar-B-Que two weeks ago.  I built that guitar at the end of last year and had been using it at every single concert since it rolled out of my woodshed.  It screamed like a banshee.

Last week, the guitar met its fate as I smashed it in concert.  It went out in a true blaze of glory after performing a set of Sex Pistols music in LA for an all-star charity concert.

So why the hell did I kill it???

If people pay good money to see you in concert, you better give them something to remember you by.

Ronn Benway and I had a routine at the end of every show where we would toss the cigar box guitar and his washboard in the air, let them smash and fall to the ground.  What the audience didn't know was, this stunt did no damage to the instruments.  Often, my guitar wouldn't even go out of tune!  But it looked great and we gave the audience an extreme 'last mental image' before going home.

Last week was different.  After Ronn and I threw them in the air for the final collision, I picked it back up and completely Pete Townshend'ed it.

Destroyed.

Looking back on that moment, I realize there was some deeper reason behind the total destruction.  A final shedding of the old skin in preparation for rejuvenation.

I'm ready to take a small break and write new songs.  I'd like to also try other combinations of backup instruments than what we've done with the Snake Oil Band.

Tomorrow is my last scheduled concert.  There's nothing on my calendar afterward as I take a short break.

Saturday, August 29th, the Shane Speals (junior and senior) will be closing the Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival in York PA.

It's so much fun playing with my son.  (We've been jamming together since he was two!)  This show will be louder than even the Snake Oil Band concerts and delivered in a White Stripes style duo.  I hope you can be there to hear it!

The festival runs from 10am-6pm and is held at the grounds of the York Emporium Bookstore.

Since I'm down to my spare cigar box guitar, I doubt I'll be tossing it in the air.  Instead, I'm going to go out with the biggest sonic boom possible.

Here's the schedule:

Tomorrow, I will destroy the stage with music.  On Sunday and afterward, I look forward to creating new songs and cool things for you all.

Stay primal,
-Shane
