Killing Facebook, Writing Music & Building Guitars

I learned to shuck oysters tonight.  Melissa took this picture and then posted on Facebook.

It's one of the few things I'll post on Facebook anymore...

This is one of those Shane Speal newsletters that has less to do with cigar box guitars and more to do with feeding your creativity and living life to the fullest.  (If you're reading to get my next concert date, I'll be in Marietta PA at the Iron Pig on Saturday night.  Info here.)

Facebook is dead to me.  When it first appeared, I was all-in.  I loved the connections, chatting with old friends and sharing my music and art with the world.  But then it got political.

And ugly.  Really really ugly.  Everybody is tearing up the pages with political witch hunts and nastiness I haven't seen in my lifetime.  Everybody has lost their damn minds!

I'm still young enough to remember what it was like to live back in the 80's.  I know that my life was just as wonderful, fascinating and magical without 24/7 news cycles and the constant political judgement of others.

I mean, look at me in this picture to the right!  I was dorky but I wore cool jamz shorts.  As I stood for this pic in 1988, I was thinking about girls, playing music and whether I needed to get my mullet permed again!

If you're remembering some of these times, too, then let me ask you this:  Why are we trading tranquility and peace for the incessant hatred and vitriol we voluntarily receive daily on Facebook?

KILLING FACEBOOK:  Two weeks ago, I unfollowed all 3500 "friends" on my Facebook account.

Every last one.  *POOF!*  Invisible!  Oh, I'm still "friends" with everyone...I just can't see their posts on my timeline anymore.  No more scrolling timelines of political outrage.  No more hate.  No more BS.

My Facebook still works.  I still can promote my music on there or post an oyster picture... but it also means I no longer see anybody's posts. The only thing on my Facebook timeline are the music pages and other business pages that I followed.

It's friggin' glorious!

pssst...  I've put easy how-to instructions at the bottom of this email in case you want to learn the 'instant Facebook unfollow' trick, too.

I'm one of those people who are easily addicted to online content.  I spent way too much time on Facebook.  Now that the site is dead to me, I've been inspired to write more fun music and make artistic guitars.  (oh, and learn how to shuck oysters.)

I want to remain an optimist.  I want to encourage others.  There's music to be made.  Guitars to be built.  Friends to jam with.

I'm writing this to you because I want to see my fans and friends have peace.  That's all.  Life is short.  Fill it with music, good friends and beautiful things.  My opinion is unpopular , but I don't care.  Let's choke out the negativity and party like it's 1988.

The world is your oyster.
Shane

The instant Facebook unfollow trick:
  • On a computer or laptop, use the Google Chrome browser and get the Facebook Toolkit extension app.  (If this link doesn't work for you, simply search Google for "Facebook Toolkit" and you should find it.)
  • Once you have the Facebook Toolkit setup in your Chrome browser, open it up and click the tab, "Removal Tools"
  • Choose "Unfollow All Facebook Friends."  If you have a lot of friends, it may take several minutes to complete the process
  • Your Facebook timeline will then be nothing but any page you've subscribed to.  (I suggest you subscribe to the Shane Speal Facebook page if you want updates on concerts and the two albums coming out this year...hint hint)
  • You can always search through Facebook for friends you want to see and follow them again.

Here's the part of my email where I post my merch.  It's how I make a living.  If you're into this stuff, dig in.  If you're just into the message above, I'm so glad you read it.  Do great things!

Brother Shane, I quit Facebook 8 years ago, completely...too much garbage then, waaaay too much now. Somehow, someway if we keep preachin' the gospel of the blues eventually, humanity will come around. Don't forget to boogie! Rev. Snowblind
